NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is seeking a new contract that would pay him 49.5 million dollars a year, which would include his own private jet and lifetime health insurance for his family. According to CNNMoney.com, "one NFL source says that Roger Goodell already has use of a private jet and health care for his family". This contract would pay him way more than the NFL's highest-paid player, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, who makes 27 million a year. This would also put him towards the top of the highest-paid sports figures in the world! Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi makes $50 million a year.

Goodell's current contract is $30 million a year, still higher than any NFL player, but for some reason he thinks he deserves a raise. Here are a few things to think about:

Roger Goodell doesn't play football! He essentially has a desk job, and is getting paid 30 million! He isn't out on the field every weekend risking himself to play football. Why in the world does he deserve 49.5 million dollars?! It can't be that hard to find someone to take his job that would do it for way less, say 5 million a year. As Quartz.com says, "the only indication we have that he's worth 49.5 million a year is that he says he is".

In terms of how Roger Goodell would actually get his contract renewed, it would have to be voted on by by a compensation committee of six owners: Arthur Blank (Atlanta Falcons), Clark Hunt (Kansas City Chiefs) , Robert K. Kraft (New England Patriots), John Mara (New York Giants, Bob McNair (Houston Texans) and Art Rooney (Pittsburgh Steelers). All 32 NFL owners agreed previously to give the committee the authority to decide whether Goodell should get an extension or not. The committee is set to discuss the contract extension in the league's annual Winter Meeting (Dec. 12-13).
