The Women's College World Series (WCWS) final is set: UW vs. Florida State. This is familiar territory for the Universty of Washington Huskies, with their last appearance being 2017, and last WCWS title being 2009. For the Florida State Seminoles, their last appearance was 2016, but they've never been to the World Series final.
The WCWS final is a best of three series that started yesterday night with UW (the No. 5 seed) facing off against the No. 6 seed, FSU. UW is from the PAC-12 conference, and FSU is from the ACC, a conference that has never won the WCWS Final.
So how'd these two teams get here? Lets's start with UW (seed numbers in parentheses, if applicable ): In the Regionals, they beat Boise State, Texas, and Minnesota. Then in the Super Regionals, they beat Alabama to advance to the first rounds of the world series, beating Oklahoma (4), Oregon, (1) and Oklahoma (4) again to advance to the WCWS finals.
FSU's journey was a little different. In their Regionals, they beat Jacksonville St, Auburn, and Jacksonville St. again. In the Super Regionals, they defeated LSU (11) to punch their to ticket to the first round of the World Series. They then lost to UCLA (3), beat Oregon (1), then beat UCLA (3) twice to advance to the WCWS Final.
Currently, the Seminoles are leading the series 1-0 with their win last night. They are one win away from their first ever WCWS title! This is already an exciting series, with a very close first game (which ended with a 1-0 final score), and a SportsCenter top 10 catch out of nowhere!
I think that the UW Huskies are going to force a game 3 and win the WCWS. Of course, being someone who's from Washington, I want them to win, but I also think they have a little bit of an advantage because this is their fourth time in program history being in the finals. But for FSU, they've never been this far. This is familiar ground for UW, but not for FSU. Another reason is that UW pitching is really strong. The Huskies have four shutouts in eight postseason games.
Tune in for game two tomorrow (June 5th) at 8 PM ET, 5 PM PT.
