The Seattle Mariners have been on a seemingly historic run recently. They are currently 46-27, and in second place in the AL West, 2.5 games behind the Astros. The Mariners were in first place for a good amount of games, before the Astros went on a 12- game and counting win streak. Ever year we always say "this is going to be our year," so I'll say it again this year to carry on the tradition. I really do think this is our year, and I'm more confident about it than ever.
I know what you're thinking....."are you crazy!" is probably the most common reaction when you hear someone mention Mariners and postseason in the same sentence. And to be honest, I probably would have a similar reaction. They are one of two teams to never make it to the World Series. It does seem a little ambitious, considering the Mariners are always plagues with injuries, and don't forget about Robinson Cano's PED suspension.
All that aside, here's why this year is our year: Jean Segura is second in the American League in batting average, Nelson Cruz is fifth in home runs, Mitch Haniger is second in RBIs, and Edwin Diaz is first in saves. I think that's incredible, to have so many league leaders. Also, something to keep in mind is that the Astros, in the midst of their win streak have been playing very mediocre teams, like the Texas Rangers (twice) and Oakland A's (twice), and Angels. The Mariners took 2 out of 4 with the Red Sox, one of the best teams in baseball right now, took 3 out of 4 with the Detroit Tigers, and have the best record in the MLB since mid May (24-9).
The Mariners seem to be able to capitalize and win key games, which they haven't been able to do in past seasons. Something is clicking and it's working. I'm excited to see how the rest of the season will go, and what the postseason will look like.
