Wednesday night, in one of the biggest college rivalry games, Duke (#1) lost to UNC (#8). Zion Williamson, Duke's star forward, injured his knee and literally tore through his shoe in the first 36 seconds of the game. He was wearing a pair of Nike PG 2.5s. Since then, social media has blown up, Nike's stock has plummeted, and this leaves us many things to consider.
Some NBA players have since spoken out about this issue on twitter:
Isaiah Thomas @isaiahthomas
Let these kids go straight out of HS!!! Too much on the line to be messing with college if you got a legit chance to turn pro. One injury can change somebody career, Zion sit yo ass down lol and we will be ready for you in the big boy league #LookingOutForThePlayers
Donovan Mitchell @spidadmitchell
Again let’s remember all the money that went into this game.... and these players get none of it.... and now Zion gets hurt... something has to change @NCAA
It seems like the NBA Players Association (NBAPA) is in support of Isaiah's comment. As of today, the NBAPA has proposed a rule change that lowers the eligible draft age from 19 to 18. This means that talented high school basketball players could skip college altogether and go straight to the NBA. For some players, they don't care about the college education, they just want to play their one year of college basketball and then get to the NBA as soon as possible. So I do see how this rule could make sense.
Zion is now faced with the question: Should he keep playing and finish his season with Duke or should he sit out the rest of the season so he doesn't risk getting injured again?
I think he should keep playing. As young as he is, if he does get injured again, it likely won't completely ruin his basketball career. I also hope that even though his main goal is to make the NBA, he also cares about his school and teammates. I think he could really enjoy the experience of March Madness and all the hype around it, and maybe realize there's more to his college experience than just using it to get to the NBA.
